-What sandpaper to use?

In this issue of the Composite 101, 202 and Advance Newsletter:

  1. Addendum to last Newsletter.
  2. A composite question from a subscriber.
  3. Workshops

1. Addendum to last newsletter.

In our last edition, we discuss how weather and temperature affect fiberglass work. I want to add that ambient humidity can also influence resins behaviors.  Resins are very sensitive to humidity it can affect cure. There’s no other solution than wait for more suitable climate to do the lamination. This is also true for vacuum bagging.

Thus, If you are using PVA has a release agent this is very important, PVA is really affected by moisture. So you have to start laminating as soon has the PVA is dry. Otherwise the moisture will attack the PVA film and the resin could stick to the mold and ruin it.

2. A composite question FROM SUBSCRIBERS.

Subscriber’s question by Phil Morris:

-“What sand paper should I use to repair gel coat”

Composite 101, 202 and Advance answer:

Here’s an over view of the procedure. First, you can use whatever sand paper the need be for the preparation/cleaning of the repair. Once you are set for the sanding of the gel coat you applied and you are sure that the gel coat has fully harden you are ready to start the sanding.

If you are not experimented with gel coat repairs than take it slow. Start with fine paper like a 180 or 220 grit. Then move on to the 400 sand paper with each sand paper change sand off the marks left by the previous sand paper.

Now come the time for wet sand paper grit 600. From that point you can use a polishing compound that remove 600 grit sand paper marks or keep on sand with finer sand paper.

The compound will specify which grit it’s good to remove. Use a proper buffing pad check the recommendation of the compound manufacturer.
